An introduction to League of Legends betting

League of Legends is now officially the biggest online game in the world. In response to that demand, Pinnacle has consistently expanded its LoL betting markets and added to its award-winning eSports betting coverage. Continue reading for a beginner’s guide on how to bet on League of Legends.

League of Legends is a fast-paced, competitive online game that blends the speed and intensity of real-time strategy (RTS) with role-playing game (RPG) elements. Two teams of five players battle each other with champions of varying skills and abilities. There are currently 134 champions to choose from, ensuring a champion to suit everyone’s taste.

How does League of Legends work?

A game of League of Legends starts with teams at opposing sides of a map in an area called the Spawning Pool, near what is called a Nexus. A match is won when either team’s Nexus is destroyed.

To destroy a Nexus, each team must work through a series of Turrets placed along a path to each base -referred to as a Lane. Along the way, each player gains levels by killing the opposing team’s champions and minions, while also defeating neutral monsters. Completing objectives earns players gold, which is used to purchase items - these items can be used to increase a champion’s stats.

A brief history of League of Legends

League of Legends (LoL) was officially announced on October 7 in 2008 and released just over a year later. The game was actually released in a beta in April 2009, giving the community a long enough period of time to give their feedback.

There is a vast amount of champions to pick from and certain line-ups may not work against others - something that should be considered when analysing LoL odds.

The development of LoL started at end of 2005 with an idea for a standalone game based on the Warcraft III mod, Defence of the Ancients. Two Dota players thought the game had so much potential and was so innovative that it deserved to be a standalone game. This was when Riot Games got involved.

Riot Games officially opened their first office in September 2006, which currently has over 1000 employees working on LoL alone. LoL was well received upon release and has grown in popularity steadily ever since. By July 2012, it was already the most played game in North America and Europe in terms of hours played.

As of January 2014, over 67 million people were playing LoL every month. By September 2016, meanwhile, Riot Games estimated numbers close to 100 million, making it easily the most popular eSports game in the world.

League of Legends betting: Who are the best teams or players?

When learning how to bet on LoL, the first trend to observe is that many of the best teams and players are based in Korea. As of writing, the best team in the world is SK Telecom T1; they also possess the world’s best individual player, Faker. His closest competitor over the last five years has been Smeb - but nobody has dethroned him so far.

The best teams elsewhere are TSM from North America and G2 from Europe – but these remain some way short. The best non-Korean player is arguably Bjergsen, a Danish member of the TSM team. He has the mechanical skill to compete with anyone in the world but needs to improve his champion diversity to reach Faker’s level.

LoL odds: What are the available markets?

Learning how to bet on League of Legends is similar to that of Dota 2 or Smite. The most popular type of bet is on the result of a match – also known as the Money Line. The odds on offer reflect the perceived level of each side, based on their recent win-loss records. If the team you bet on wins, your bet wins - it’s as simple as that.

LoL is played on one map, known as the Summoners Rift, meaning there is no need to worry about different maps (unlike in CS:GO betting). You can, however, bet on teams to not drop a map or game in a series, which is usually a best of three but can also be a best of five, depending on the event.

As well as betting on the winner of the match-up, Pinnacle also offers handicap betting. As previously mentioned, you can bet on a side to win one map in a series or a favourite to potentially win without dropping a map. On top of this, you can bet on the total number of kills in a match, generally over or under 50.5.

What tournaments are offered for League of Legends betting?

LoL betting features at all of the major Pro-Gaming tournaments throughout the year, including the IGN Pro League, Major League Gaming and Intel Extreme Masters events.

Game knowledge, the heroes that certain players would like to play, which champions are currently overpowered and whether teams are early or late-game teams can really impact your LoL betting.

Thanks to a huge investment by Riot Games, 2014 saw the launch of the League of Legends Championship Series. Featuring huge prizes, professional salaries and the best action, the League of Legends Championship Series is now one of the highlights of the LoL season - along with the World Championship, LoL Pro League and LoL Master Series.

Other competitions are also covered, including OGN The Champions and NiceGameTV. To view all the latest upcoming events, visit our eSports schedule.

League of Legends betting strategy

Understanding how to bet on League of Legends effectively involves some key differences from other eSports. Not only does the performance of individual players matter immensely - but so do the line-ups. There is a vast amount of champions to pick from and certain line-ups may not work against other ones - something that should be considered when analysing LoL odds.

Game knowledge, the heroes that certain players would like to play, which champions are currently overpowered and whether teams are early or late-game teams can really impact your LoL betting. Indeed, Certain champions perform better further into the game as they scale better. They start quite weak but their abilities grow throughout. Other champions start very strong and fade as the game progresses.

Rotations and communication are two of the most important things for a successful team in League of Legends. If a side has mixed nationalities, communication will not be as strong and this can affect their overall performance. Rotating your teammates around the map for pushes and ambushes on enemy lanes is the most important aspect to master - and it is no secret the best teams excel here.
