Call of Duty: CDL Major V Toronto 2023 | Tournament Overview

CDL 2023 Major V is the last event before the Championship, and is set to take place in Toronto, Canada. There’s no doubt that this will be a thrilling showcase of the best Call of Duty (CoD) talent in the world.

The Call of Duty League (CDL) is one of the most recognised esports events in the world. Featuring the popular first-person shooter video game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the league has attracted top tier teams who have bought franchise spots to be a part of it, recruiting players from around the globe into their organisations.

What is the Prize Pool for CDL Major V?

The total prize pool for the tournament is $500,000, and the winning team will walk away with $200,000. Second place can earn $120,000, and third will earn $80,000. Prizes then stretch all the way down to eighth.

Most importantly, teams can earn CDL points. These are what teams have been playing for all season in order to gain access to the CDL Championship Weekend – this is where a $2.5 million prize pool was previously awarded in 2022.

How do the qualifiers for CDL Major V work?

The CDL 2023 Major V event will feature a qualification round where teams will compete for seeding for the main event, this will dictate who plays who at the LAN on May 25 – May 28.

As for the qualification stage, it will be held online with teams playing from the headquarters, and teams will be seeded based on their performance in previous events, with those with the most CDL points up to this point gaining the highest seeds.

All twelve teams are guaranteed spots in the final event, but their all-important place in the bracket is yet to be decided.

Who is attending CDL Major V?

There will be 12 teams at the event, all of which are blockbuster names in CoD, and only three (Atlanta FaZe, OpTic Texas, and LA Thieves) have been confirmed for CDL Champs. Everyone else is still in the running for a Champs invite, so this is a huge event, as well as the last chance to gain enough points to reach the top eight.

Atlanta FaZe:

Atlanta FaZe are the top-ranked team in the CDL standings with 295 CDL points. The team have been dominant throughout the season, and despite only winning one Major (Major II), they’ve been consistently placed in the upper echelons of the league.

OpTic Texas:

OpTic Texas are currently ranked second in the CDL standings, they’ve banked 270 CDL points. The poster boys of CoD are aggressive, and are certainly ones to watch.

Los Angeles Thieves:

The Los Angeles Thieves go into Major V third in the CDL standings, with a total of 255 points. They won the previous Major (IV), so they will go into this one as the favourites with momentum on their side.

Toronto Ultra:

Toronto Ultra are the home team for the CDL 2023 Major V event, and they are currently ranked fourth in the standings with 245 CDL Points. The team have a strong fanbase, and will have the support of the home crowd during the event. A reasonable performance will see them secure a Champs invite, but this could be their chance to win it all.

New York Subliners:

The New York Subliners are currently ranked fifth in the CDL points table at 225. The team have been consistent throughout the season, but since winning Major I they have been in the middle of the pack, a stark contrast to the bright sparks we saw back in December.

Seattle Surge:

The Seattle Surge are not quite surging in the CDL, sitting right in the middle of the pack at sixth. Surge have a young, hungry roster of players, but they have struggled to find consistency throughout the season, especially in the Majors. A strong performance in the Qualifier events has yet to translate to the main event.

Boston Breach:

The newest team in the CDL, and one of the most marketable. Currently ranked seventh, they are sat in a CDL invite spot, but the tight nature of the league could see them drop out.

Minnesota RØKKR:

The only team in the league made up of mostly Europeans are very much at risk of a poor performance. They are consistent, but struggle when they come up against a big team at the top of their game. This is the main reason why they are eighth going into the Major.

Vegas Legion:

Having previously called Paris home, the Vegas Legion have moved to the glamour of Las Vegas. However, despite that, it’s still the same old story as the 2022 season – misery towards the bottom of the table. Ninth position is firmly theirs. They couldn’t buy more experience in their squad, but are they past their prime?

Florida Mutineers:

The Florida Mutineers rank 10th in the CDL standings with 80 points. They need to beat Minnesota by over 50, so it’s going to take an extraordinary performance from a team that cannot settle on a roster.

Los Angeles Guerrillas:

The only thing the team ranked in 11th have a chance at winning is the competition for the best logo. They need a miracle to see a CDL Champs invite come into their inbox with an 80 point deficit to make up.

London Royal Ravens:

The London based team have the furthest to travel to the event in Toronto, and the team sit at rock bottom of the CDL leaderboard in 12th, with 60 points. They would need to ace the qualification event and the Major to get that CDL invite.

How can I watch CDL Major V?

The CDL Toronto Major V event will take place in Toronto, Canada, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Tickets are currently on sale, but most of them have reportedly already been snapped up by CoD fans.

As for where to watch the event, fans can tune in to the official Call of Duty League website, or the league's official YouTube Channel to catch all the action live. The league also collaborates with other streaming platforms like Twitch, as well as smaller platforms for broadcasts in additional languages. Co-Streamers of the event are due to be announced soon, and they will be broadcasting throughout the Major.
