BLAST Pro Series: Copenhagen 2018 recap

BLAST Pro Series: Copenhagen has come to an end and what better way to look back at a tournament then to review how each team performed. Read on to find out what happened at the latest BLAST Pro Series event and what you have to look forward to for the rest of the year.

On November 2, the BLAST Pro Series: Copenhagen 2018 begun and the best teams from around the world came up against each other in Copenhagen’s Royal Arena. The tournament was split into three stages: Group Stage, Pro Standoff, and Grand Finals.

The Group Stage was in the best of one format (Bo1), and the Grand Final were best of three (Bo3). The Pro Standoff was a series of 1 vs. 1’s on the BLAST Aim Map, with $20,000 up for grabs for the winner - the total prize pool for the event was $250,000.

What were the odds for BLAST Pro Series: Copenhagen 2018?

Astralis, who didn’t manage to get to the Grand Final, were the outright favourites heading into the event at (1.69*). The winners Na’Vi (5.40*) were second favourites and NiP (12.91*), the eventual runners-up, were one of the big outsiders.

What happened in the Group Stage?

It was a surprising Group Stage for many people and most would have assumed that Astralis would dominate, but they really struggled to close out the majority of their matches.

MiBR surprised a lot of people, failing to win any matches throughout the Group Stage but the biggest surprise came from NiP who managed to make it through to the Grand Final, winning three out of their five matches and drawing against FaZe.

What happened in the Pro Standoff?

Cloud9 (who were without Golden on day one) surprised many people during the Group Stage. The team’s coach, Valens, had to stand in for them and he also surprised the world by how well he performed. Golden returned in time to finish off the Group Stage and also compete in Cloud9's success against Astralis during the Standoff.

It was a bumpy ride for Astralis throughout the Group Stage and also during the Pro Standoff, they managed to get a couple of round winners in but eventually Cloud9 managed to secure the overall majority wins at 28 : 23.

What happened in the Grand Final?

In an interesting turn of events, NiP managed to make the Grand Final, their first since IEM XII – Oakland in 2017. Na’Vi have proven to be incredibly strong and consistent throughout the years but for NiP, it was a chance to catch their big break.

Mirage

Both teams went blow for blow in the first half, keeping the scores almost level throughout until Na’Vi started to move the game along near the end, finishing 9:6.

The second half started strong for NiP as they managed to defeat Na’Vi at the A bomb site and even defused the bomb.

NiP continued to perform well, keeping Na’Vi in check and even started to pull the game back but Na’Vi decided enough was enough and it was time to stop messing around, only dropping one round by 9:9, finishing the match at 16:10.

It seemed like a race for Na’Vi by the end of match, with electronic leading the charge with 25 kills and s1mple and Edward trailing just behind on 24.

Inferno

Starting off strong, NiP won the pistol but couldn’t keep the streak going. A similar trend appeared as the scores became tied up once more before the start of the second half.

It seemed as though Na’Vi’s experience aided them to a swift victory over NiP, again, very reminiscent of the previous map. Near the end, NiP started to pull it back and Na’Vi didn’t want to take any risks but eventually they managed to eco enough to build up a strong defence and fight off NiP, winning BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen 2018.
