Curling betting basics: How curling is played

Curling matches are played by two teams of four players with teams alternating throws. They direct their stones towards a circular target, which is called the house. The game is made up of 10 ends, which are similar to innings in baseball or sets in tennis.

Players from the two teams throw two stones each per end. The team with the stone nearest the centre of the house at the finish of an end scores a point. If the team has thrown the two stones that lie closest to the house they score two points, if three of their stones are closest to the house they score three points and so on. If no stones remain in the house at the end of a leg then neither team scores a point.

An essential part of success in curling is being the team that throws the last stone in an end. This team has the “hammer” (last throw) and holds an advantage to score points. If the team scores points at the end of a leg they give up the hammer to the other side. If no points are scored in an end, then the hammer remains with the side currently in possession of it.

Possessing the hammer is a huge benefit and retaining it makes scoring points difficult for the opposition. It falls to the team’s skip (captain) to make the most of that advantage by scoring as many points as possible before passing the hammer to the other team. If the team can only score one point, then the skip may choose to knock all stones out of the house in order to keep control of the hammer.

Mixed doubles curling made its debut at the 2018 Winter Olympics and follows slightly different rules to the traditional version. Each team has only two players and the game is played over eight ends. Discover more about the rules of mixed doubles curling from the World Curling Federation here.

How to bet on Curling

A variety of markets are available for this year’s Winter Olympics curling competition:

Curling match betting – Who will win the match? This mirrors the Money Line betting in the NFL or the 1X2 in soccer, much like a Draw No Bet..

Curling Handicap betting – The bookmaker assigns a plus (+) or a minus (-) Handicap to each team. That number of points is then added to a team’s minus number or subtracted from their plus number to determine the outcome of the bet.

Olympic curling Outright betting – Betting on a team to win the gold medal in their event.

Olympic curling Totals betting - Betting on whether the total number of points scored by both sides will be over or under a figure set by the bookmaker.

2022 Winter Olympics: Curling betting

Since curling does not collate the same level of data compared to other sports, it is important to look at previous results when making curling predictions. The major curling event of each year is the Curling World Championships. This event emulates the format of the Olympic curling tournament and places the teams under the same pressures they will encounter at the Winter Olympic Games.

Previous Olympic results show that Canada have dominated the Olympic curling competition. Since curling’s reintroduction in 1998, Canada have dominated the event, medalling in all events played in all games up until 2018 in PyeongChang, when the men’s and women’s teams placed fourth and sixth respectively.

While Canada will still be amongst the favourites and could medal in Beijing in all events, it’s Sweden who have emerged as the frontrunners in the men’s event after putting in a dominant display in PyeongChang 2018 and winning the World Championships in 2021.  Switzerland won the women’s World Championships event this year, so will be Canada’s main competitors in that event in Beijing 2022.

Switzerland will also be the ones to watch in the mixed doubles, having won seven mixed doubles World Championships titles; however, Scotland have won the event in 2021. China have also had recent success in the mixed doubles format too, earning a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships. The team could win only their second-ever Olympic curling medal if they repeat or better that World Championships performance on home soil.

The mixed doubles event, however, remains in its infancy and has seen an increase in funding since becoming an Olympic event. Therefore, the competition could be hard to predict so bettors could find value in the mixed doubles curling odds.
