England vs. Senegal: World Cup round of 16 predictions

England and Senegal clash for a place in the World Soccer Cup quarter-finals. Will Senegal coach Aliou Cisse's counter-attacking style outwit the defensive solidarity of Gareth Southgate's Three Lions? Inform your World Cup 2022 predictions ahead of this key last 16 tie.

England’s firepower can get them to the quarter-finals

Gareth Southgate’s first target at the World Cup was for England to win their group and now that has been achieved, the aim is to go as deep as possible in the tournament.

Senegal are their opponents in the round of 16, after the current African Cup of Nations champions progressed having finished runners-up in Group A.

This promises to be a clash of contrasting styles and another fascinating European/African matchup on the world’s biggest stage.

England have shown, in patches, what they are capable of when they attack with pace and have scored nine goals in their three Group B matches.

At the other end of the pitch, they have only conceded twice but their defence was not severely tested in their opening three matches against Iran, USA, and Wales.

Southgate is expected to stick with a 4-3-3 formation, although he has big decisions to make over which personnel to start with on Sunday.

Senegal scored five goals in their group games with all five being scored after the 40th minute and three of the them scored in the second half.

Without their talisman, Sadio Mané, their goal threat is not as strong as it could have been but Aliou Cissé has the pace and power of Boulaye Dia and Ismaïla Sarr to call upon.

Team news

England have an almost fully fit squad to select from, with Jordan Henderson the only concern after taking a hit to his ankle in their 3-0 win over Wales.

Southgate made four changes to the team for the final group game and now faces a dilemma, especially in the forward positions.

Marcus Rashford was one of the four players handed a start and the Manchester United ace scored twice to take his tally to three for the tournament. Phil Foden was another who was handed his chance and also got on the scoresheet.

As for Senegal, they are set to be without two of their most influential midfielders for the clash at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Idrissa Gueye will definitely miss out on the match, after the Everton star picked up his second yellow card of the tournament in their win over Ecuador and will be suspended.

Cheikhou Kouyaté is also a major doubt, as the Nottingham Forest man missed the Ecuador game due to a hamstring problem.

England vs. Senegal predictions

There are 13 places between the two teams in the world rankings, but the gap looks bigger on paper when you see the injury issues impacting the Senegal [+694]  [7.940] squad.

Mané would have offered a different dimension to the Lions of Teranga and now they are also without Gueye and probably Kouyaté, it looks like a much weaker Senegal team.

The attacking pace of England [-189] [1.529] is likely to prove the difference between the sides, with the Three Lions able to get in behind the Senegal backline.

Harry Kane, top scorer at the last World Cup, is yet to find the back of the net in this tournament and it seems a matter of time before he is back amongst the goals, especially as the England skipper takes penalties. Kane is [+124] [2.240] to score anytime.
