Lazio welcome Napoli to the Stadio Olimpico in what is undoubtly the pick of the fixtures on the opening day in Italy.
Carlo Ancelotti’s first game as Partenopeiboss is a tough one, but Napoli have a very good recent record against the biancocelesti, most notably, a comfortable 4-1 victory in February earlier this year.
New signings and departures are likely to play a pivotal role in the outcome of the game as both have lost significant players this summer but have also moved quickly to replace them.
Lazio lost commanding centre back Stefan De Vrij to Inter whilst Napoli’s pass master Jorginho was sold to Chelsea – both of which were crucial to their respective teams’ success last year. Napoli moved quickly to bring in midfielder Fabian Ruiz from Real Betis, as well as tricky winger Simone Verdi from Bolgona – with the latter already looking tremendous (albeit) in pre-season.
Sassuolo’s Francesco Acerbi was brought in to replace De Vrij at centre back for the sky blue side of Rome, whilst also bringing in a tricky winger themselves in the form of Joaquin Correa to replace now West Ham record signing Felipe Anderson.
Both teams will be hoping their new signings can make an instant impact and secure what would be an important mental boost for the season ahead with a victory.
Lazio vs. Napoli: Where is the value?
The value in this game may lie with the draw. Both teams won’t want to lose their opening game, especially with the pragmatic management style of Ancelotti, who will no doubt settle for the draw if victory is not within Napoli’s reach away from home.
In Ciro Immobile, Lazio have last year’s Cappocanniore (top scorer) and will no doubt be relying on him to knock a few past the opposition goalkeeper, a position that could prove costly for Napoli with the departure of Pepe Reina to Milan and the injury to first choice keeper Alex Meret could see Karnezis start between the sticks in Rome.
Despite both teams having impressive goal tallies last year (Lazio top scorers with 89 and Napoli third most with 77), odds of Over 2.5 and 3 at 1.917 may push bettors to opt for the under market in the expectation that it could be a tight contest and with Under 2.5 and 3 priced at 1.961, it could be a viable option to consider.
