Real Sociedad vs. Real Madrid betting: Recent games
Following Real Madrid’s 5-1 Supercopa win over Barcelona (across two legs), the outlook in the Spanish capital seemed extremely promising – with Barca fans rightly concerned. Just a month later, though, it is Barcelona who are sitting pretty at the top of La Liga, with Real fans ruing four dropped points after draws with Valencia and Leganes.
Level with leaders Barca are Real Sociedad: Real Madrid’s opponents this weekend and a team more than capable of extending their tricky run. As recently as 2014, Sociedad beat Real Madrid 4-2, while Zinedine Zidane’s men drew three times in a row in an eerily similar opening to the campaign last season.
That said, Real Madrid’s recent head-to-head record with Real Sociedad does not make great reading for their opponents. That 4-2 defeat was Madrid’s only loss to Sociedad in 21 games. Last term, meanwhile, Zidane’s side beat them 3-0 both home and away.
More value in a Real Madrid win
Given the statistics, bettors may well find more value than usual in a Real Madrid win. If we are to assume Real Madrid will return to winning ways, all recent events have done is extend the 1x2 Money Line and Handicap odds - a rare opportunity.
A return to form will happen soon – it is simply a matter of when with a team as good as Real Madrid.
Considering Real Madrid won 15/19 La Liga away games last season (and 1/1 so far this term), these are very favourable odds indeed. If you want to bet on the Money Line, Handicap and Totals markets, find out more about the basic bet types.
Real Madrid’s two recent draws (2-2 against Valencia and 1-1 vs. Leganes) have thrown the market wide open, with Zidane’s men looking far less of a certainty than after their opening-day win at Deportivo. But a return to form will happen soon – it is simply a matter of when with a team as good as Real Madrid.
Two seasons ago, for instance, Real Madrid also drew twice in a row but won their next game 3-0. After last season’s three draws in a row, meanwhile, Madrid responded emphatically – recording a 6-1 victory at Real Betis.
Will Sociedad benefit from Real Madrid’s suspensions?
Even if Real Madrid had won all of their opening games, however, Real Sociedad would not have been an easy test. Eusebio Sacristan’s team have won three out of three, scoring at least three goals in each of their matches. It leaves Real in the unfamiliar position of knowing they can’t overtake Sociedad in La Liga even if they win.
Sociedad are simply flying and have only been denied top spot (on goal difference) thanks to Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Espanyol. Juanmi is the side’s top scorer so far with three goals, while Asier Illarramendi and Willian Jose have both netted twice. Collectively, Real Sociedad have scored four more league goals than Real Madrid thus far.
Eusebio Sacristan’s team have won three out of three, scoring at least three goals in each of their matches. Real Madrid can’t overtake Sociedad in La Liga even if they win.
Zidane’s men, too, are missing key players. Cristiano Ronaldo is still suspended after pushing a referee during the Supercopa and, although Madrid have a squad that is the envy of Europe, their talisman has been missed. Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema are now injured, while Marcelo will be suspended for the Sociedad game.
Another key factor to consider is the influence of the Champions League. Real Madrid knew they had a Champions League game just four days after their draw with Leganes, which may have affected them mentally or perhaps through their approach. As the Sociedad fixture comes four days after their European match, fatigue could become an issue.
Real Sociedad vs. Real Madrid betting: Where is the value?
As previously discussed, however, betting on a Real Madrid win may represent a real opportunity for value this weekend. While Madrid may be fatigued, Real Sociedad will actually be playing in the Europa League a day after Zidane’s team. Their fine start and sixth-placed finish last season were both uninterrupted by European football. Now comes a new test for them.
We have already referred to Madrid’s money line and handicap odds – but the draw is 4.31* and Real Sociedad 4.92* for those encouraged by their impressive start. There could also be logic in visiting the totals market. Considering the attacking prowess on show, over 3 and 3.5 goals could tempt many at 2.020*. Under 3 and 3.5 goals is 1.877*.
