Reigning champions Juventus host Lazio in this weekend’s highlight Serie A fixture. Juve won late on in their opening fixture whilst Lazio suffered a disappointing defeat at home to Napoli.

The Juventus attack managed to score 86 goals from an expected goals total of just 59 last season. This seems unsustainable to some degree but it is worth considering that Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuaín are among the World’s most clinical attackers.

Higuaín has departed to be replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo which changes the dynamic in the Juve attack somewhat. The Argentine striker was often pivotal in big games for Juve since his finishing skill ensured that the low volume of chances they created often still resulted in a goal.

Ronaldo is bound to be the talking point ahead of his home debut. The Portuguese forward scores his goals through producing a high volume of shots rather than making the most of big chances like Higuaín. He has already made a productive start to life at his new club despite failing to find the net in his first Serie A appearance.

Ronaldo’s shot per 90 minutes stats in his first game were up from his average at Real Madrid with the star firing eight towards goal against Chievo for an expected goals total of 0.76.

In contrast, Higuain produced 3.27 shots per 90 and 0.43 xG/90 last campaign. Ronaldo will find the net with more regularity than the departed Argentine if he can maintain his current statistics. However, Juve will have to provide him with more service than they did Higuain, especially in tight games like this one.

If they can provide him with the right platform then adding Ronaldo’s ability to take a high volume of shots from strong goal scoring positions to Juve’s notoriously efficient attack could make them an equally as effective attacking unit. Add that to one of Europe’s tightest defences and it is easy to see why they are strong favourites for the title.

Despite their defeat to Napoli, Lazio’s own talisman started the season well. Ciro Immobile produced an expected goals total of 0.74 against tough opposition. The tests get no easier for the Rome side though with their opening two fixtures coming against last season’s top two.

Immobile and the Lazio attack will need to produce more than they did in this fixture last season. They combined for just 0.18 expected goals as Juve held on for a 1-0 win. The team has not been significantly strengthened over the transfer window so it may be a season of treading water for Simone Inzaghi’s men.

Last weekend the Eagles held Napoli to a close game but ultimately lost out to marginally superior opponents. This may well be repeated at Juventus Stadium, especially with Juventus’ new star primed to provide them with an extra dimension in attack.

Juventus vs. Lazio: Where is the value?

It will be interesting to see if Ronaldo’s addition to the Juventus attack ensures they create more goal scoring opportunities against opponents of the caliber of Lazio. Juventus are available at 1.877* to score over 2 goals which could provide value if Ronaldo can be a factor.

Juventus have strengthened well this summer and are likely to be too good for Lazio this time around. There may be value to be found backing Juventus on the Money Line considering the reinforcements they have added to an already elite team.
