La Liga champions Barcelona take on Champions League finalists Real Madrid in the 271st El Clasico. Real are favourites to win a third consecutive Champions League title but it is the Catalan side who have dominated La Liga this season.
There is still plenty of pride to play for in this one with Real attempting to end their hosts bid for an undefeated La Liga season. With no meaningful action for Real until the Champions League final at the end of May expect Zinedine Zidane to field a strong side.
Real will have to do without Dani Carvajal who will miss this game through injury. Lucas Vazquez covered the right-back position on Tuesday night but was a little unconvincing at times. It will be interesting to see if Barca target this area considering they tend to build attacks down their own right-hand side.
Last time out against Deportivo Lionel Messi drifted from a central position to link up with Ousmane Dembele down the right-side. Luis Suarez occupied an unorthodox inside-left position with the emphasis placed on Jordi Alba to provide attacking threat from the left flank.
The lack of an orthodox left-winger would suit Real’s stand-in right-back who could instead focus on defending Alba. The potential to deploy Gareth Bale on the right-wing would also do much to curb the Spaniard’s attacking instincts. Barca will need to be wary of the fast counter-attacks that have made Real so strong in Champions League play.
This kind of tactical battle is not one these sides often face in La Liga where deep-lying defences allow them to dominate the ball. The need to compromise between attack and defence may explain why El Clasico is often a high-scoring affair. There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 12 of the last 13 games between the sides with both teams finding the net in 11 of those fixtures.
Barcelona vs. Real Madrid: Where is the value?
Real have found goal-scoring form as the season has progressed and will be eager to avenge their 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture. The Madrid side can be deadly on fast breaks and have the quality to score goals if Barca overcommit in attack. They are available at 1.900* to score over 1.25 goals and should offer value at that price.
An early goal should lead to a high-scoring game. Over 1.25 first-half goals was a winning selection in three of the last five Clasicos and is currently priced at 1.625*
