Atletico Madrid vs. Real Sociedad betting: Atleti’s change in form
Atletico have had a difficult start to the season. After five games the idea of missing out of Champions League football was a distinct possibility, as Los Rojiblancos sat in sixth.
It would be a disaster for Atleti to miss out on Europe's biggest club competition, particularly after their move to the Wanda Metropolitano, a home which currently, still sits in the Vicente Calderon’s shadow.
They have accumulated 1.8 points per home game this season. In comparison, in their final season at the Vicente Calderon Atletico amassed 2.3 points per game, and were infamous for their superiority in home fixtures.
This superiority is yet to be transferred to their new home. However, Diego Simeone’s men are beginning to show a few signs of form as of late.
Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last five league matches, including a comfortable win against Levante.
Despite the negativity surrounding Atleti, they are still unbeaten in the league, conceding just six goals; only Barcelona (5) have conceded less - Atletico Madrid have always excelled defensively in under Diego Simeone.
Going forward, Antoine Griezmann looks to be hitting form after a barren spell in front of goal, with three goals and two assists in his last two games across all competitions.
With a strong defence and a strikeforce who finally look to be finding some form, Atletico are in good shape to begin their surge towards Barcelona.
Sociedad's defensive issues
Real Sociedad started the season in great form. They have scored 27 goals in the league already this season; only Valencia (33) and Barcelona (34) have scored more.
However, it has been their defensive stability which has curtailed a surprise push for the top spots in La Liga. Injury problems have plagued Real Sociedad’s defensive ranks, leaving them with difficulty picking a strong defensive back line for the majority of the season.
The Txuri-Urdin have scored in 12 of their 13 games this season, including eight set-piece goals.
Inigo Martinez has not long been back from injury, however, his inclusion into the back line should help to reinforce the defence. However, Diego Llorente is suspended for the Txuri-Urdin, leaving a hole that Aritz Elustondo will likely fill.
Real Sociedad will need to improve on their most recent defensive performances which has seen them concede seven in their last five with no clean sheets, particularly against an Atleti side who are starting to find the net.
The likelihood is that it will be difficult to break through Los Rojiblancos’ defensive line, and if they want to get anything out of the game they'll have to keep Atleti off the scoresheet.
Atletico Madrid vs. Real Sociedad betting: One eye on Chelsea?
Real Sociedad may travel to an Atleti side which, even if unintentionally, could already be looking towards their weekday clash against Chelsea.
Atletico Madrid sit third in their Champions League group, two points behind Roma with just one game to go. They are on the brink of elimination, with a win against Chelsea and help from Qarabag against Roma their only hope of qualification into the knockout rounds.
Real Sociedad have scored 27 goals in the league already this season; only Valencia (33) and Barcelona (34) have scored more.
Unlikely, but possible. With this crucial night in mind, it could be feasible that this is already in the minds of the Atleti squad.
If Real Sociedad do find complacency amongst Los Rojiblancos, they will have the perfect opportunity to exploit their chance and begin their push for the upper regions of the La Liga table.
Atletico Madrid vs. Real Sociedad: Where is the value?
Whilst Atletico’s defence has been sturdy this season, Real Sociedad’s attack has been just as strong.
The Txuri-Urdin have scored in 12 of their 13 games this season, including eight set-piece goals. Over 0.75 Real Sociedad goals at 2.200* offers a good bit of value for a side who have a very good attacking record.
Whilst Real Sociedad have been impressive going forward, the likelihood is that Atleti’s newly-firing strikeforce should create opportunities to score against a struggling Real defence. A -1 handicap odds of 1.961* could be a smart bet when looking at Atleti’s recent form and defensive stability, particularly at the Wanda Metropolitano.
