Inter’s strength out wide

The key players in this game could be Inter’s wide players. Inter Milan usually line-up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Perisic and Candreva offering attacking options in wide areas. Between them they have assisted 14 goals already this season.

Perisic is particularly dangerous since he can strike the ball equally well with both feet, allowing him to cut inside and shoot as well as crossing. He has scored three goals with both right and left foot shots this season and his ability to go either side of the defender will cause problems. If he is left one on one with his marker then it will be a tough day for the Lazio defence.

Lazio usually select a 3-5-2 formation. The two wing backs, often Lulic and Marusic, are tasked with providing both width in attack and cover in defence. Inter’s wingers will exploit any space left behind when the Lazio wingbacks go forward which will cause problems if Lazio overcommit in attack.

The two contrasting formations could leave Inter’s danger man Perisic in a one vs. one matchup with Lulic. leading to dangerous situations that could pull the Lazio centre-backs out of position. Any space an out of position defender opens up near the penalty area is usually exploited by Inter’s Mauro Icardi who is currently Serie A’s top goal scorer.

Icardi and Immobile: A clash of styles

Icardi will not be the only high scoring centre forward on the San Siro pitch. Lazio’s Ciro Immobile has 16 goals to his name already this season and is showing no signs of slowing down. The two prolific forwards have contrasting styles but are both equally as effective in front of goal.

Icardi is considered to be a traditional goal poacher. He is an excellent player but does all of his best work inside the opposition box. His 17 Serie A goals have all come from inside the penalty area and he has attempted only eight shots from outside the box this season.

Icardi also tends not to be heavily involved in build-up play, attempting only 14 passes per 90 minutes played. In fact, he was averaging a goal from every 12 touches of the ball at the start of this Serie A season. It is not surprising he has just a single assist to his nameso far. The Argentine is reliant on scoring goals to make an impact upon the game.

In contrast, Immobile plays a bigger role in Lazio’s general attacking play. As well as top scoring for the Rome side, he has also provided seven assists for his teammates. Immobile completes twice as many dribbles per 90 as Icardi and suffers double the Inter striker’s number of fouls per game.

The difference between the two strikers is also demonstrated by how their goals are assisted. Immobile’s eight open play goals have been assisted by six different players, with the Italian striker often making his own scoring opportunities. Icardi’s poaching ability works well with Inter’s strength out wide. Nine of his twelve open play goals have been assisted by either Perisic or Candreva and both wide players know to look for him in the opposition penalty area.

To stop Icardi, Lazio must prevent Inter Milan’s wingers from providing him with service. Inter themselves will need to prevent Immobile from picking the ball up in advanced positions. The Italian international is as capable of providing an opportunity for a team mate as he is scoring a goal himself so he needs to be well marked. The game could be decided by which team can prevent the opposition’s star striker from playing his natural game.

Inter Milan vs. Lazio odds: Where is the value?

Serie A has transitioned from a league known for its defensive strength to one of the highest scoring in Europe. Elite attacking talents like Icardi and Immobile have made the league an exciting one to watch and Saturday’s game should be no different.

Both Inter Milan and Lazio have been involved in plenty of high scoring games this season. If Inter’s wingers or Lazio’s creative midfield players are allowed space to play then they are capable of providing opportunities for Serie A’s highest scoring players. Immobile and Icardi have been in great form and this game could provide them with yet more goals.

If this match is favourable to the two strikers then it is likely to be a high scoring game. Over 2.5 goals to be scored is available at 1.819* and could offer value to bettors. Read the Pinnacle guide to over/under betting strategy to improve your total goals betting.

Inter will be looking to continue their title challenge after a great opening half of the season. If Perisic and Candreva can isolate their wing back in one vs one matchups then they could achieve another positive result. They will be well fancied to continue their early season form at the San Siro so a bet on Inter Milan to win could be a smart one.
