With AC Milan gunning for Champions League Qualification and Napoli looking to keep pace with the leaders Juventus, Sunday’s encounter in Milan should be an intriguing one.

The last meeting between the two sides on the opening day of the season saw Napoli snatch a hard-fought 3-2 home win after going two goals behind in the first half.

Saturday’s fixture should be yet another compelling contest, as AC Milan will be desperate to strengthen their top four hopes with a win or at least a draw at home.

Napoli are 13 points clear of fourth-placed AC Milan but nine points behind the leaders – leaving them in a peculiar position of being too far ahead to fall down below third, but too far behind a rampant Juventus to climb any higher.

Last weekend’s 2-1 victory at home to Lazio proved Napoli’s belief that there is still a fight to be had with Juventus for the Scudetto, and that they refuse to rule themselves out of the race.

Aside from the loss to Inter Milan on Gameweek 17, Napoli have been in great form with six wins in their last seven league games, with their only other loss outside of Serie A being the 1-0 away defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League.

Arkadiuz Millik, Dries Mertens, and Lorenzo Insigne between them have been involved in 47 goals for Napoli thus far in all competitions, with all three in double figures for goals and the latter pair both providing six assists each.

Conversely, like Lazio last weekend, AC Milan will come into the game under intense pressure from the teams below that are all vying to replace them in the final Champions League spot.

Just four points separate 4th-8th position in Serie A, meaning any slip ups can be immediately capitalised by one of Roma, Lazio, Sampdoria or Atalanta.

The impending departure of Gonzalo Higuain means that Suso takes over as Milan’s top scorer with five goals (including a goal last time out against Genoa) – the Spaniard also leads the league assists total with eight.

Genoa’s Krystof Piatek, who has 13 goals in Serie A, has been touted as a replacement for the outgoing Higuain with some reports claiming a deal is close. Whether he starts in such a big fixture on Saturday, if he were to be signed and registered in time, remains doubtful. Academy graduate Cutrone is more likely to lead the line for the Rossoneri.

Cutrone, who was in great form in the Europa League for Milan with four goals in five games, has not replicated his form domestically, registering only three goals in 19 appearances.
