Unsurprisingly, Manchester City go into the game as favourites, although not as clear as many would think. The World Cup may have had a detrimental effect on Guardiola’s choices, but an enticing effect to their value in the Arsenal vs. Manchester City odds. Another season with extremely high expectations for Manchester City got off to an impressive start at the weekend. A comfortable 2-0 victory against Chelsea in the Community Shield gave Pep’s team their first taste of silverware this season.
The difficulties that Guardiola may face is balancing his strongest squad with necessary rest after a gruelling World Cup. No team had more representatives at the summer’s major tournament than Manchester City with 16 representatives. Whilst the Spaniard agrees that this is something to be immensely proud of, the toll of the tournament could easily impact their performance in the first few games.
Arsenal have avoided this possible issue. Whilst Manchester City had 16, Arsenal only had eight, with many falling before the business end of the tournament. In fact, Leicester’s squad played more minutes in Russia than Arsenal.
Instead, Arsenal find themselves in new territory as Unai Emery takes charge of his first game in the Premier League after over 20 years of Arsene Wenger at the helm. In a sense, the Gunners are a little bit of an unknown prospect, yet their preseason form has offered a sense of optimism.
Arsenal didn’t lose a game within 90 minutes throughout preseason, only losing to Atletico Madrid on penalties, all whilst scoring 17 and conceding just three.
Whether Arsenal can take their form into the new season is yet to be seen, but the signs are hopeful. It does feel like a transition season however, so it would be a real surprise to see them competing for the title come 2019.
Arsenal vs. Manchester City betting: Where is the value?
With the toll of the World Cup and Arsenal being somewhat of an unknown prospect, this is one of the rare times where all-conquering Manchester City could offer real value in the odds.
Odds of 2.070* for Manchester City to defeat the Gunners could entice many, although it will be a difficult test for Pep’s men with Arsenal making good acquisitions in the summer to bolster areas that they struggled with last season.
Whether these names can hit the ground running for Arsenal remains to be seen, a problem which Manchester City should avoid as the core names in their team remains the same as last season.
The odds also point to goals on Sunday with over three priced at 1.877*, no surprise looking at the strikeforces on show. However, I would be looking at under three goals at 2.020*, as whilst I do see goals in this one, Arsenal’s preseason defensive record is impressive, and Manchester City kept Chelsea well at bay in the Community Shield.
